Abstract

104,270. Ganthony, R. May 13, 1916. Cylinders, construction of; reservoirpressure, regulating. - A combustion chamber 22 of adjustable capacity, but large enough to hold a charge that would more than fill the cylinder of a two-stroke-cycle engine at atmospheric pressure, is separated from the cylinder by a valve 19 and is scavenged by air or by a spring piston 12 before the combustible charge is admitted. The movement of the piston is limited by a screw stop 13. The ignited charge may be admitted to the power cylinder 1 after the beginning of the power stroke; in this case, the exhaust valve 8 is closed before the end of the in-stroke. to equalize the pressure between the cylinder and combustion chamber when the valve 19 opens. The charge is supplied from a reservoir, and its pressure is controlled by a by-pass valve on the pump delivery pipe, or by holding open the inlet valve of the pump by a sliding cam. The engine is started by admitting tn a cylinder making a working stroke, a charge from the pump, the admission valve 9 being opened by hand for this purpose, and the clearance 22 reduced to its minimum.
