Abstract

2079. Peck, W. Jan. 27. Gas and like engines, igniting in. The charges of two-stroke reversible engines, described in Specification No. 4037, A.D. 1902, are fired by the heat of compression, or by the heat of the combustion chamber, and timed by a cylindrical igniting-valve. Hydrocarbons enter the combustion chamber con the piston's out-stroke through the valve V, opened by the pressure of the air communicated to it from the crank chamber B, which receives air through the cam or eccentric operated valve D on the in-stroke of the piston. After the piston has uncovered the exhaust port X, air from the crank chamber enters the cylinder, through the piston passage b, which coincides with the passage O. On the in-stroke, the air is compressed and communication is estabblished between the cylinder and the combustion chamber through the movement of the valve K, operated by the common cam or eccentric E, the charge being ignited by the heat of compression or by the heated combustion chamber. The valvechamber and cylinder are provided with waterjackets. The sliding igniting-valve may be replaced by one having a rotary movement, and the eccentric may be adapted for reversing. The igniting arrangements are applicable to engines other than those described in the above-mentioned Specification.
