Abstract

21,297. Howard, H. J. Oct. 8. Gas and like engines, valves and valve-gear for. The piston consists of a. valve-member B attached to the connecting-rod or piston-rod, and a piston member A provided with a valve seating E. The parts A, B are normally held together by a spring F. In a two-stroke cycle engine, the valve is opened at the end of the out-stroke to admit a compressed charge from the crank chamber, when the part A comes against a stop G ; or the valve may be opened automatically by the pressure in the crank chamber when the piston overruns exhaust ports, or when an exhaust valve is opened. In a four-stroke cycle engine, the valve opens during the suction-stroke, partly by its inertia and partly by the friction between the part A and the cylinder, and closes slightly late on the compression stroke. If the exhaust valve is controlled by an adjustable cam, the engine will work on the two-stroke or four-stroke cycle at will.
