Abstract

562,964. Twostroke engines; valves &c. QUILTER, W., and WILKERSON, J. S. Jan. 15, 1943, No. 776. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In a two-stroke engine having pistons 10, 11 located one within the other and within a cylinder 6, the pistons being connected to cranks 23, 24 at about 180 degrees on a crank-shaft 21 and the cylinder and the outer piston having openings 9, 17 which register when the pistons are at the end of their movement towards one another, an ignition device is formed in two parts, one part being located in each opening. Mixture from an inlet 2 is admitted to the cylinder 6 by a valve 3 normally held on its seat by a spring 5 and is compressed in the space 25 by the piston 10. At the end of the stroke, a valve 13 in the head of the piston 10 is opened by the abutment of its stem against the valve 3 which is then closed by its spring, and the mixture is admitted to the space 26 within the piston, compressed between the pistons and ignited when the ports 9, 17 come into register. Exhaust takes place through piston-controlled ports 7, 8 in the cylinder and 15, 16 in the piston 10. The valves 3, 13 are provided with extensions 3<1>, 13<1> having peripheral serrations extending helically to create turbulence.
