Abstract

580,398. Cylinders and valves. RHODES, C. T. Jan. 18, 1945, No. 818. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In a two-stroke engine having piston-controlled exhaust ports, a sleeve valve B which slides axially carries a projection S which seats on the cylinder head to seal off an annular air inlet passage T, the cylinder pressure on the projections thus maintaining the valve in its closed position. A multicylinder block has independent cylinder heads, the valve seatings being cooled by water jackets P connected together in series, and independent of the cylinder jackets. The valves are operated by cams J through tappets H and rockers G against springs K or directly by cams on the crank shaft which engage extensions from the sleeves. Liquid fuel is injected by an injector N and in the case of a petrol engine the compressed mixture is ignited by a sparking plug M.
