657,682. Cylinders. THORNTON, A. C. Feb. 3, 1948, No. 3095. [Class 7(ii)] In a two-stroke engine, the cylinder head has complex, completely-curvilinear inner surfaces and a concave recess 5 all fully open to the cylinder, the recess forming a turbulence zone and being offset from the axis of the cylinder and within the projection of the walls of the cylinder, convex deflecting side surfaces 2 on the cylinder head leading to the recess 5, and provision for a sparking plug 8 between the recess 5 and one or more of the surfaces 2 where it is swept by the incoming stream of the fuel mixture. Inlet and exhaust ports 6, 7 respectively are arranged in circumferential positions around the cylinder walls, the inlet ports being at an inclination so as to direct the gases upwardly. Figs. 6 and 10, (not shown), illustrate modified forms of the recess 5 and surfaces 2.
