697,651. Cylinders. FICHTEL & SACHS AKT.-GES. Feb. 8, 1950 [Feb. 19, 1949; March 10, 1949], No 3270/50. Class 7 (ii) A two-stroke spark-ignition engine having inlet and exhaust ports arranged at approximately the same height in the cylinder wall has a substantial part of. the inner surface of the cylinder head less than 2 mm. from the head surface of the piston when at top dead centre preferably, as shown, in the region or regions 5 of the piston head adjacent the exhaust exit or exits 17. A sparking plug may be situated in any of the positions 10, 10a, 10b in the combustion chamber 3, which is asymmetrically disposed where there is a single exhaust exit, the asymmetry being more pronounced where a deflector piston, Fig. 1 (not shown), is used than with a crowned piston, Fig. 2 (not shown), but is symmetrically disposed where there are diametrically opposed exhaust ports as shown and like inlet ports at right angles thereto, the chamber then extending over the . whole cylinder head in the plane of the inlet ports.
