Abstract

734,945. Combustion chambers; cooling cylinders. LANZ AKT.GES., H. Oct. 16, 1952 [Oct. 17, 1951 ; Jan. 7, 1952 ; May 30, 1952]. No. 25967/52. Classes 7(2) and 7(3). In a hot-spot fuel injection engine having the fuel injector 6, Fig. 4, arranged coaxially of the cylinder and in which wall members 16 integral with the cylinder head form an ignition chamber 15 of substantially conical shape, the temperature of the walls or port thereof being arranged in conjunction with the compression to effect ignition of the fuel during normal running, these portions of the walls 16 immediately adjacent to auxiliary devices liable to damage by heat, such as injection valves or ignition plugs for use during starting, are air-cooled or water-cooled and no water cooling means is provided for any other of the cone-shaped wall of the ignition chamber 15. In an air-cooled engine, Fig. 4, the chamber 15 is in the shape of a paraboloid of revolution and air cooling fins are provided adjacent the injector 6, additional fins 14 extending part way round the wall of the chamber. The fuel is injected towards an annular depression 24 of elliptical cross-section in the piston top and rebounds into the chamber 15. A sparking plug or incandescent igniter may be provided for use during starting and in a modification the walls of the chamber 15 are truly conical. The fins 14 may be omitted. In a water-cooled engine, Fig. 5, the fuel injector 43 and starting igniter 45 are carried in inserts 42, 44, secured to the wall of the ignition chamber 37 and cooled by cooling water from the cylinder jacket 38 which flows through small passages 50, 51, formed in projecting ribs 52, 53, of the ignition chamber wall, the remainder of which wall is not cooled. The insertion members 42, 44, are sealed by sealing rings 46, 48.
