805,078. Fuel injection engines. DAIMLER-BENZ, A.G. March 25, 1957 [March 28, 1956], No. 9714/57. Class 7(3) Fuel is injected by an injector 13 tangentially on to the wall 12 of the transfer passage of a precombustion chamber 10 so as to form thin film thereon. The fuel jet is given a slight downward component so that the film spreads helically down the wall of the transfer passage, the air entering the cylinder being set into rotation in the same rotation direction as the spreading of the fuel film. A subsidiary jet of fuel 17 to facilitate ignition may be injected into the chamber 10 towards an incandescent ignition coil 23 or into the cylinder working space 8. The temperature of the neek 11 of the precombustion chamber is maintained at an appropriate value for vaporization of the fuel on the wall 12 by insulation, or control of the supply of cooling medium thereto or, in an air cooled engine, by an appropriate selection of cooling fins on the neck 11. In a modification the axis of the chamber 10 and passage 11 is inclined to the cylinder axis.
