Abstract
713,637. Oil engines; water cooling. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. Nov. 21, 1950 [Dec. 16, 1949], No. 28460/50. Classes 7(2) and 7(3) A transfer passage 7 between a main combustion space 4 and a precombustion chamber 6 of compact shape i.e. spherical or approximately spherical, is enlarged stepwise 12 at its opening into the precombustion chamber and a sharp edge 12<1> is formed at the junction of the passage with the enlargement. The cylinder and head are water cooled and free passage 21 for the cooling water can be provided between the wall 18 of the precombustion chamber and walls 19, 20 around the inlet and exhaust valves. The diameter of the enlargement is for example one and a half to two and a half times the diameter of the transfer passage. Spaces 14, 15 which restrict heat dissipation are formed between the precombustion chamber and the cylinder head. In a modification the precombustion chamber is made cylindrical in its intermediate portion and substantially conical at its ends directed respectively towards an injector and the enlargement. It is located centrally between two inlet valves and two exhaust valves. The combustion chamber in the piston comprises a circular boundary wall in the piston head. The transfer passage may comprise a nozzle or conical widening at its opening into the main combustion space. The transfer passage and enlargement may be formed in a liner, or a one-piece liner enclosing the precombustion space and the transfer passage and its enlargement may be inserted into a chamber in the cylinder head. The precombustion chamber may be in the form of a sphere slightly deformed so as to become somewhat elliptical in section. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 674,534.
