Class 7(ii) In a combustion chamber 7 for an internal-combustion engine having inlet and exhaust valves 5 disposed on one side of the cylinder with which they co-operate, the cylinder head is so shaped that the combustion chamber 7 is of the greatest height over the valves, the height decreasing gradually toward the cylinder axis and on the other side thereof being a flat space 7a of very small height whilst the sparking plug 9 is located in the combustion chamber at the point of its greatest height, the cylinder head is air cooled over that part in which the combustion chamber is of greatest height and liquid cooled over the flat space 7a whilst on the side of the sparking plug 9 remote from the cylinder the head is cooled by air or liquid or a combination of both. The flat space 7a is cooled by water in a conduit 10 in the. cylinder head, the air cooling of the rest of the head being facilitated by cooling fins 15, 11, the latter being arranged at right angles or parallel to the crankshaft. The end part of the chamber 7 may, however, be cooled by water in another conduit, which latter can also serve as the outflow for the cooling system. The chamber 7 may be given a hollow shape around the exhaust valve to produce a whirling of the exhaust gases in order to heat the wall of the cylinder head in the vicinity of the sparking plug. The combustion chamber may have a straight or curved contour between the parts of maximum and minimum heights.
