Abstract
261,084. Sharp, A. Aug. 11, 1925. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-In an engine wherein heated water is injected into the working cylinder after the completion of a two- or fourstroke internal combustion cycle, steam being thereby generated and expanded in the cylinder, separate exhaust pipes are used for the combustion products and for the steam. As shown in Fig. 1, a terminal exhaust port 20 leads to a chamber 19 from which lead the pipes 9, 12 for the combustion products and steam; a slide valve 9<a> controls the openings leading to the two pipes. On the valve rod 15 is arranged a second valve 14 controlling the admission of scavenging and charge air but this valve may be independently actuated. The water is heated in a coil 10 placed in the combustion-product exhaust pipe. Liquid fuel is injected though the nozzle 1 after an air charge has been compressed in the cylinder; at the end of the expansion stroke the products pass out through the pipe 9, some products remaining in the cylinder. These are compressed on the succeeding in-stroke and at or towards the end of this stroke; the water is injected into the cylinder and is converted into' steam by absorbing heat from the gases and cylinder walls. Overhead valves 1, 2, 4, 12, 14 and 34 may be. arranged as shown in Fig. 4 for the liquid fuel, water, combustion product exhaust, steam exhaust, scavenging air and starting air. The Provisional Specification states that water may also be injected during the internal-combustion cycle and that one steam cycle may alternate with two or more internal combustion cycles and viceversa.
