Abstract

265,599. Hildebrand, R. Feb. 8, 1926, [Convention date]. Locomotives, internal-combustion engine.-For working a four-stroke or two-stroke Diesel or other engine under load without increasing the maximum pressure in the cylinders, an auxiliary power medium under pressure is heated externally of the engine and is introduced into the cylinders during the power stroke after the combustion is completed and preferably after the expansion of the gases of combustion to a pressure equal to that of the auxiliary medium. The invention is applicable to engines in which supercharging takes place, and the auxiliary medium may be steam, compressed air, products of combustion, or a mixture, of these, and may be admitted by the means shown in Fig. 2. A supply pipe 34 and valve 36 are connected to the engine cylinder 18 by a fluid-actuated valve 22, the stem of which carries a piston 25 sliding in a valve cage 23, the valve being normally closed by a spring 24. The space between the valve 22 and the piston 25 is connected by passages 38, 40, 41 to the space above the piston and to a space behind a piston valve 29 actuated by a cam 32 on an engine-driven shaft 33. The valve 29 is normally held by a spring 30 in the position shown, in which the space above the piston 25 is connected by passages 43, 45 to the atmosphere. When the valve 36 is opened, the pressure of the auxiliary medium holds the valve 29 in contact with the cam and the space above the piston 25 is connected continuously to the pressure medium and also intermittently to the atmosphere, opening the valve 22. The operation of the valve 22 may be timed by axial adjustment of the cam 32 on its shaft, the recess 46 in the cam having an inclined end 48. As applied to a locomotive engine 5, Fig. 1, the auxiliary power medium may be steam from a boiler 53 heated by exhaust gases from the engine exhaust pipe 55.
