Abstract
228,092. Curtis, C. G., and Newton, E. R. Jan. 24, 1924, [Convention date]. Two - stroke - cycle engines ; cylinders, arrangement of ports in. - In a plant comprising a twostroke internal combustion engine discharging into a secondary expansion apparatus, such as a turbine or reciprocating engine, the internal - combustion engine has two sets of exhaust ports which are opened successively, scavenging being effected at an approximately constant super-atmospheric pressure. Partially expanded gas in the twostroke engine 10, Fig. 5, is transferred through ports A to the nozzles A<2> of a turbine stage 17. Compressed air is admitted by ports C, and the secondary exhaust ports B are opened at the end of the stroke, air and exhaust gas being thereby led to the second stage nozzles B<2> of the turbine. The first stage chamber 17 acts as a reservoir to steady the fow. The ports C, A, B are controlled by the oppositely moving pistons 12, 13. The turbine drives a compressor 25 supplying the air to the ports C. In a modification, Fig. 7, wherein the two-stroke engine 10 discharges into a reciprocating engine 21, the two sets of exhaust ports commmunicate with a common pipe 36 leading to the admission port of the cylinder 21, which has a valve-controlled exhaust port 24. Instead of being controlled by the pistons, the ports C, A, B may be valve-controlled, and single exhaust ports may be substituted for the double ports.
