Abstract

749,017. Internal-combustion engine gas generators. PRINCE, D. C. Aug. 12, 1953 [Aug. 12, 1952], No. 22211/53. Class 7(1) A hot gas generator includes a compound cylinder having therein a reciprocable compound piston which is connected to a rotatable crankshaft by a connecting rod, the piston includes a working part and a double-acting compressor part of larger effective cross-sectional area than the working part, the compound cylinder forms with the pisvon an ignition chamber containing the working part and having an exhaust port and a compression chamber containing the double-acting compressor part; an inlet valve is provided for admitting air or fuel air mixture into one end of the compression chamber, a duct is provided for delivering air or mixture from the other end of the compression chamber to the ignition chamber during the working stroke of the working part and an outlet valve is provided through which air or mixture entering through an inlet valve must pass in order to get to the duct, the compressor chamber forming spaces at the opposite sides of the compressor part and through which the air or mixture passes on its way to the duct. In Fig. 1 a compressor 4 draws in air or mixture and supplies it to an inlet port 15 through a passage 14. The exhaust gases are supplied by an outlet 17 to a receiver (not shown) which feeds a turbine or other load. In Fig. 2 a double-acting compressor 22 is utilized. Several pairs of pistons in their respective cylinders can be connected to the crank-shaft 11. It is stated that a diesel cylinder may be used. In either embodiment the cylinder and piston may be arranged in opposed relation to a similar cylinder and piston. The opposed cylinders and pistons would be symmetrical with respect to the crank-shaft axis located between them. Compression ignition or spark ignition can be employed and the fuel may be injected into compressed air in the cylinder.
