Abstract

749,864. Two-stroke and four-stroke engines. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH & CO. (ENGINEERS), Ltd., Sir W, G. Oct. 28, 1954 [Oct. 5, 1953], No. 27287/53. Class 7(2) A pump piston 12 diametrically opposed to and in counterphase with a working piston 1 to balance it compresses charge with its outer end. As applied to a two-stroke engine with terminal inlet ports 6 and a poppet-type exhaust valve in the cylinder head the piston 12 may draw air directly from the atmosphere via a filter and a non- return valve 16, for delivery via a non- return valve 17 to an air chest 4, but as shown initial crankcase compression is used, air entering the crankcase via a filter 18 and non-return valve 20. Eccentrics 10 on the main crank cheeks drive the piston 12, The invention is applicable to multicylinder engines.
