Abstract

555,072. Four-stroke and two-stroke engines. COSNAHAN, W. T. March 7, 1942, No. 3015. [Class 7 (ii)] In a single-acting engine, an annular pump chamber 6, Fig. 1, for air or, gas, is formed around a reduced part 1 of the engine piston 2, the bottom of the pump chamber being formed by a slidable sleeve 5. The engine shown works on a four stroke cycle and the sleeve 5 is reciprocated by a connecting-rod 8 and an eccentric 9 on the crankshaft. The cylinder is fitted with the usual combustible-mixture inlet valve and exhaust valve. Air admission and transfer ports 7, 13-15 are provided in the cylinder 3 and a cylinder lining 14a, and a port 12 in the sleeve 5, so that air drawn into and compressed in the space 6 is transferred to the engine cylinder above the piston 2 to serve alternately as scavenging and charging air. The eccentric 9 may be set in advance of or in unison with the engine crank, and an inner collar on the sleeve 5 may enter a recess under the head of the piston 2. In a modification, comprising a pump chamber 25 and a sleeve 16, Fig. 4, the sleeve is connected to an eccentric pin 19 on a toothed wheel 18 driven from the crankshaft at half speed, so that the sleeve is reciprocated once for two reciprocations of the piston, and a port 21 in the sleeve coacts with air-intake ports 22, 23 during each half of a revolution of the wheel 18. In further forms (a) the sleeve has separate ports coacting respectively with an inlet port and a transfer port in the cylinder; (b) the air from the space 6 or 25 is ejected through an automatic valve into a manifold from which it is distributed to another engine cylinder ; (c) the sleeve 5 is stationary and sleeve or other valves control the intake and transfer of the air ; (d) the ports 22, 23, 27 may be variably throttled to vary the charge transferred ; (e) the engine works on a two-stroke cycle, the pump space being' proportioned to give a full cylinder supply suitable for petrol injection or a carburetter engine.
