Abstract

370,994. Two- and four-stroke-cycle engines; valves. SLOAN, J. J. E., Holmfield House, Mossley Hill, Liverpool. Oct. 11, 1930, No. 30442. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi).] In a multi-cylinder Diesel engine hot combustion gases are added to the cylinder charge during the compression stroke, the supply of gases being controlled by a rotating or reciprocating sleeve valve which surrounds the piston. The Figure shows one of the cylinders of a three-cylinder engine in which the normal admission and exhaust and byepasses for the combustion gases are controlled by a sliding sleeve valve driven from an eccentric 8. The tube is provided with an exhaust port 10, and with an admission port 12 which coacts both with the normal inlet passage 13 and with a byepass or duct 14 common to all the cylinders and through which hot gases are conveyed to the appropriate cylinder. The engine may work on the two- or four-stroke cycle. Cooling. To diminish the cooling during the compression stroke the sleeve valve controls ports 16, 17 which lead the cooling fluid into and out of the cooling spaces 15. The fuel oil may be used as a cooling medium. In modified forms of cooling, (1) jets of water impinge upon the cylinder heads or walls during the exhaust and suction strokes ; (2) the cylinders are provided with rotating or reciprocating shields which mask them from the air during the compression and working strokes.
