Abstract
275,497. Vane, W. R., Vane, H. C., and Sutton, P. E. Feb. 17, 1927. Two- and four-stroke-cycle engines.-The cylinders 10 are oscillated about an inlet and exhaust manifold 12 through the medium of a cylinder-extension 11, wholly or in part surrounding the manifold which is supported in end frames 13. Air or mixture and exhaust chambers 19, 20, respectively, in the manifold and opening at opposite ends thereof, are provided with ports 17. 18 registering with ports in the extension 11 and thence in communication with inlet and exhaust pipes 25, 26 and ports 27, 28 in the cylinder wall. The piston 16 is connected to the crank shaft 14 by the rod 15 which passes through a packing gland 30 in the end plate' 29. Air or mixture induced through the port 27 into the space in front of the piston is therein compressed, and transferred to the combustion chamber by passages 32 and ports 33. In a four-stroke-cycle engine, Fig. 5, inlet and exhaust valves 39 are actuated by cams 38 on the engine-driven shaft 44.
