Abstract
205,146. Penning, C. J. H. June 14, 1922. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-The engine is of the type comprising a pair of parallel cylinders each having two pistons 2 moving in opposite directions and transmitting their movement through rocking beams 4. According to the invention, both beams are connected to the same crank pin 11 or coincident crank pins respectively by a short rod 12 and a pair of long rods 14 which are rocked together at 17. The shaft is situated midway between the cylinder axes and the effect of this driving gear is that when the engine runs in the direction of the arrow, the exhaust ports 24 are both opened and closed before the air ports 25. The cylinder casing is divided into three chambers the middle one 22 forming a cooling- water chamber and the upper and lower ones 21, 23 either air or exhaust chambers according to the direction of running; there are water spaces with walls 27, 28 between these chambers and the cylinder liners 21. Liquid-fuel admission 30 and starting air valve, mountings are bolted to the liner and work in stuffing-boxes in the cover 34.
