Abstract
431,144. Cylinders; valve gear. ELLIOTT, A. G., Darley Dene, Belper Road, and PEARSON, J. D., Lynedene, Blagraves Lane, Littleover, both in Derby. Jan. 2, 1934, No. 136. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In an engine comprising one or more blocks of cylinders with combustion chambers of less cross section than the cylinders, each cylinder is provided with two exhaust valves opening downwards substantially parallel to the cylinder axis, and two inlet valves set at an angle to the cylinder axis, all operated by one or two overhead cam shafts. Fig. 1 shows an engine with a single overhead cam shaft h<2> actuating two exhaust valves f and two inlet valves c preferably arranged at 45‹. The cylinder head is formed with inwardlyextending projections b<1>, to give the narrower combustion chamber b, as described for instance in Specification 287,258, [Class 7 (ii)]. One or two sparking-plugs i are mounted opposite the inlet valves. In a modification, the valves are actuated directly by a pair of overhead cam shafts, and the sparking-plugs are arranged between the valves.
