Abstract
750,439. Valve gear. PORSCHE, F. Sept. 3, 1953 [Nov. 5, 1952], No. 24403/53. Classes 7(2) and 7(6) A cam shaft drive for the valve gear of an engine having two or more cylinder banks 1, 2, comprises an intermediate shaft 24, 24<SP>1</SP>, for each bank located parallel to but offset from the 'plane containing the axes of the cylinders of its respective bank and in the medium plane between two adjacent cylinders of the bank, the intermediate shafts extending into the crank casing laterally of the crankshaft. As shown the engine .comprises a horizontal opposed cylinder engine with each banks 1, 2 having two cylinders 3, 6 and 5, 6, respectively. The crankshaft 17 drives an intermediate shaft 21 having bevel wheels 22, 22<SP>1</SP>, driving the intermediate shafts 24, 24<SP>1</SP>, which drive camshafts 12, 16, actuating the exhaust valves 11, 14. Further intermediate shafts 28, 28<SP>1</SP> are geared to the shafts 12, 16, and drive the camshafts 30, 30<SP>1</SP> actuating the inlet valves 9, 13. The intermediate shafts 24, 24<SP>1</SP> run through protective covers 35 sealed by rubber rings 36, 37, and are arranged at the side of the cylinders in the medium plane between each pair of cylinders 3, 4 and 5, 6. The parts of the ..cam shaft disc of one bank of cylinders .are arranged to be interchangeable with that of the other bank.
