Abstract

684,221. Valve-gear. CONTINENTAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 2, 1951, No. 13144/51. Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi). In an overhead valve multi-cylinder engine having separate cylinder heads and a single camshaft actuating the valves of a number of aligned cylinders, the cam-shaft is supported in a single tearing structure in each cylinder head and separate flexible cam-shaft housings secured to the cylinder heads enclose the portions of the camshaft between the cylinder heads. The invention is described as applied to a V-engine each bank cf which is provided with a cam-shaft 21 actuating the valves through rocker arms pivoted on shafts 32 supported by bearing caps 30A, 31A bolted to bosses 30, 31 on each cylinder head. One boss 31 only of each cylinder is provided with a bearing 36 for the cam-shaft, which shaft is reduced in diameter at and passes with clearance through, the bosses 30. Flexible housings 28 cover the portions of the cam-shaft between the cylinder heads 29, and lubricant supplied to the interior of the cam-shaft from the duct 23 flows to the rocker shaft bearings through passages 40, Fig. 4. The cam-shaft is driven from the crankshaft by a gear 16 meshing with a compound layshaft gear 17, 18 which meshes with a bevelled gear 19 on a shaft 20 driving the cam-shaft through bevel gearine.
