Abstract

702,074. Cooling lubricant. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. May 11, 1951 [May 13, 1950], No. 11149/51. Class 12(3) [Also in Group XXVII] In a lubricant-cooling arrangement for an internal-combustion engine with a cooling jacket 12 surrounding the engine cylinders, a lubricant duct 14 is provided which extends longitudinally of the engine inside the jacket 12, the duct being connected by throughbores 19 directly to the main bearings 17 and the duct 14 being so disposed in the jacket 12 that the coolant has contact with it on all sides. The cylinder 11 and upper half of the crankcase 13 are cast in one and provided with the sheet-metal jacket 12 which may be permanently secured to the casting by means of adhesive, welding or soldering; the jacket 12 may, however, be detachable from the casting. The duct 14 is cast integrally with the cylinder and crankcase through the medium of lugs 16 which may be located in the planes of the transverse walls 18 supporting the crankshaft bearings 17, the walls 18 and lugs 16 having through-bores 19 that connect the duct 14 with the bearings 17. In a modification, the duct may be separately attached to the cylinder and crankcase casting and have lubricant supplied thereto at any point; the duct may consist of brass or steel, for example. In a further modification, a number of tubes are arranged in series or parallel from which other ducts may branch off to supply lubricant to the camshaft or other bearing; these ducts may also be located in the cooling water space. Specification 678,902 is referred to.
