Abstract

143,366. Ayton, R., and Sheppard, G. A. April 16, 1919. Cylinders, construction of, and cooling; crank chambers. - The cylinder comprises a relatively large mass of metal of high specific heat and good heat conductivity, which may be coated with another metal, such as silver, which conveys the heat quickly to the surrounding air. The mass of metal may be aluminium, and it may have an iron liner, or its working surface may be hardened. The crank chamber may be integral with the cylinder and thus serve to form part of the mass; it may be lined with, and the crankshaft bearings surrounded with, insulating- material. The metallic mass may also take the form of a thick wall as shown at B and B<x>, Fig. 2, with longitudinal buttresses B<2>, B<3> which may serve as pipes. The liner may be tapered and be secured by the cylinder cover, or the jacket may be slit longitudinally; and in both cases, the contact between the liner and jacket is secured by springs. The jacket may be cast on to the liner, and the surface of the liner electro-plated with copper and notched to secure good contact.
