511,903. Regulating. READ, B. Feb. 24, 1938, No. 31814. Divided out of 511,853. [Class 7 (vi)] The overall inlet or exhaust period, or both, are varied by the use of two cam shafts both angularly adjustable by hydraulic means dependent upon the engine speed. Fig. 1 shows a hydraulic cylinder and piston 63, 64 for adjusting the sprocket 51 of a chain drive 47 for driving two cam shafts 45, 46 as described in Specification 511,853. Oil under pressure, for example, from the lubrication system is supplied at 66 and, as the engine speed rises, forces out the piston 64 against a spring 67, whereby one shaft is advanced and the other retarded. A pressure-relief valve 70 closed by a spring. 71 may be provided. In addition, a thermostatically controlled relief valve may be provided to compensate for the varying viscosity of the oil.
