Abstract

Class 7(6) In a four-stroke engine having a supercharger powered by an exhaust turbine, a phasing unit is provided to alter both inlet and exhaust valve timing to give efficient operation at starting and low loads by means of small valve overlap, low expansion ratio and high compression ratio (Fig. 2), whilst limiting cylinder pressures at normal and full loads by means of large valve overlap, high expansion ratio and low compression, ratio (Fig. 3). The inlet and exhaust periods α<SP>1</SP> #<SP>1</SP> remain constant, one being advanced whilst the other is retarded and vice versa. The phasing unit may be controlled, manually or by a governor, by a sliding helical gear cluster on a crankshaft-driven member and meshing helical gears on inyet and exhaust valve camshafts, or by cam followers movable transversely to cams on a mutual camshaft (or gearedtogether camshafts), by eccentrics on a control shaft
