Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve fuel efficiency and surely prevent knocking, by providing a means for setting a compression ratio and a means for timing the opening and closing of an intake valve. CONSTITUTION:An oil tappet 2 is in contact with a cam 3. A rocking cam 5 is mounted on a push rod 4. An intake valve 8 is in contact with a rocker arm 6. In a knocking region, the oil pressure of an oil pressure gallery 16 is heightened by a load detector 21 so that the volume of an oil pressure chamber 13 increases, the rocking cam 5 rotates clockwise and the cam 3 starts moving up. As a result, the valve 8 immediately starts acting. The effective compression ratio is thus lowered to prevent knocking.
