Abstract

1496513 Altering valve timing in IC engines G G SCARROTT 3 Feb 1975 [7 March 1974] 10198/74 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] The timing of I.C. engine inlet and/or outlet valves is varied by interposing between a cam 2 and the end of a push-rod or valve stem 1 a member 3 which is eccentrically pivotal about an axis 10. Depending upon the shape of the interposing member 3, e.g. by the provision of an inclined surface 8, the opening and/or closing instant of a valve may be advanced or retarded. A constant thickness interposing member may be employed to ensure that the valve stroke remains constant. The position of the interposing member is adjusted by an electric or hydraulic servomotor (not shown) in accordance with engine load, by rotating about the pivot axis 10.
