Abstract

1,128,266. Valve gear. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG A.G. Oct. 21, 1966 [Nov. 17, 1965], No.47434/66. Heading F1B. In a four stroke I.C. engine an additional inlet valve 7, Fig.2 opens into a combustion chamber (5) Fig. 1 (not shown) of the piston when the latter is in the t.d.c. region, the additional inlet valve being opened and closed by actuating means at an instant in the engine cycle which is different from the instant of opening or closing of the other inlet valves or valves 1 to increase the effective valve overlap or to increase the effective duration of inlet valve opening. The actuating means comprises a push rod 13, Fig. 4 acting through a rocker 14 on a pressure plate 17 bearing on all three valves 1, 7 so that the point of connection is nearest valve 7. Movement of the rocker and pressure plate causes valve 7 to be opened until nose 19 engages stop 20 so that further movement causes the valves 1 to be opened with the valve 7 remaining open. Alternatively valve 7 may be separately actuated e.g. hydraulically. In supercharged engines valve 7 opens 20 degrees - 30 degrees before t.d.c. and may be opened twice in each cycle. The inlet ducts may be separate or common and shaped to assist swirl. The inlet valves may have fins to assist swirl. The additional inlet valve may form part of a coaxial arrangement of inlet and exhaust valve. In another embodiment a spring-loaded push rod 27, Fig.7 mounted on the exhaust rocker lever (21), Fig. 6 (not shown) causes downward movement of lever 25. Simultaneously a pawl 29 is moved anti-clockwise by spring 28 so that its nose engages roller 30 to arrest lever 25 with the valve 7 open when the exhaust valve rocker (21) moves in the closing direction. A roller 31 on the inlet rocker lever (14) then engages the pawl 29 to move it clockwise against springs 28 so that lever 25 moves to its datum position and valve 7 is closed.
