Abstract

565,748. Valves. BOORER, A. April 23, 1943, No. 1998. [Class 7 (vi)] In an engine having a valve chamber 10 containing inlet and exhaust valves 16, 17 which at the appropriate times are isolated from the engine cylinder by a master valve 11, the master valve 11 and the port it controls are arranged in a cavity 12 in the cylinder head and the head of the master valve, when open, approaches closely to the position of the crown of the piston at top dead-centre, the cavity constituting substantially the whole of the combustion space when the piston 15 is at top dead-centre. The cross-sectional area of the cavity transverse to the axis of the cylinder is kept to a minimum to make it comparable with the depth of the cavity which is determined by the lift of the valve necessary to ensure a minimum resistance to flow past the valve, the valve opening in the direction of the cylinder axis. In operation, the master valve 11 opens at the point in the normal cycle usual for the opening of the exhaust valve, but the exhaust valve 17 is by this time fully open and the master valve closes at the point in the cycle usual for the closing of the inlet valve, but the inlet valve 16 remains open for some time after this. The exhaust valve and the master valve are actuated by a common cam 18.
