Abstract

488,403. Valves ; valve gear. RADELET, F. Nov. 29, 1937, Nos. 32902 and 32903. Convention dates, Nov. 28, 1936 and Nov. 5, 1937. [Class 7 (vi)] Piston-controlled exhaust ports are fitted with a freely-mounted axially movable annular valve adapted to open and close under the control of the pressure of the exhaust gases. In the form shown in Fig. 1, exhaust ports 3 are closed by a ring valve 5 extending around, and moving axially of, the cylinder, the valve being closed by fluid pressure contained in a bellows 7 connected by a pipe 8 to a chamber 9 with a screwed plug 10 for adjusting the pressure. The passage 4 leading from the ports 3 is inclined at 4a so that when the ports are uncovered by the piston, the exhaust gases have access to the end of the valve 5 and open it, escaping in a sudden puff, the valve then reclosing quickly and preventing back-flow of exhaust into the cylinder. In a modification, the valve is in the form of a flexible ring 11, Fig. 3, secured at its inner edge between a flange 14 and projections 13 arranged between the ports 3, the seating 12 of the valve being curved as shown. A groove 16 in the seating may form an oil seal. The ring valve 11 may be laminated.
