396,641. Valves; regulating. ALBARET, H., 174, Boulevard Chaves, and DUFOUR, J. M., 144, Rue du Rome, both in Marseilles, France. Feb. 16, 1933, Nos. 4780 and 4781. Convention dates, Feb. 27, 1932, and June 7, 1932. [Class 7 (vi).] A rotary conical or hemispherical valve 1, having a port 32 controlling inlet and exhaust, and another port registering with the spark plug at the time of ignition, is adjustable axially by means of a screw 22 bearing on the end of the valve stem through a ball 23, or a bearing comprising several balls, so as to maintain a clear play between the valve and its seat. A ported sleeve 11 surrounding the valve may be adjusted angularly to vary the timing, by means of teeth 16 at its upper end engaging a worm on a spindle 17 provided with a squared end 18 for the reception of a key or other tool. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the valve 1 is protected from the hot gases by an inner shield 59 secured by screws 61 and ported at 62, 63, 64 to correspond with the inlet, exhaust, and ignition passages 48, 49, 65 in the valve casing. A spring- pressed sleeve 39 fitted with packing-rings 40 is provided around the valve stem, and similar packing-sleeves 50 are fitted in the inlet and exhaust passages. Grooves 41 in the valve stem become filled with oil and serve both for lubrication and for preventing escape of gases. In another modification, the sleeves 50 are omitted, and packing segments and strips are fitted circumferentially and radially in the outer face of the valve.
