Abstract
597,743. Rotary engines. CLARKSON, G. C. Oct. 16, 1945, No. 27447. [Class 110 (ii)] A rotary internal combustion engine has a rotor of sinuous form rotatably mounted in an axially slidable manner between a pair of fixed side plates or casing members whose inner faces are also of sinuous form, and sparking plugs carried by the side members extend into combustion pockets on the inside thereof. The rotor 21 is provided with an inner sleeve 22 and an outer sleeve (not shown) and is coupled to the output shaft 29 by means of a cylindrical member 26 having slots 27. The coupling may be effected by providing the inner sleeve 22 with pins or studs which engage the slots 27. The explosive charge enters by way of an inlet 16 in an end cap 11 and is distributed through the slots 27 and ports 31 in the sleeve 22. Sparking plugs 19 project into combustion pockets formed in the side plates. Exhaust takes place through ports in the outer sleeve. Rollers 33, preferably bearing on pairs of secondary rollers 34, may be provided at the peaks of the side plates or the rotor. The ports in the inner and outer sleeves may be replaced by poppet valves mounted in the side plates.
