Abstract
1,078,351. Rotary internal combustion engines. W. H. ANGRAVE. April 23, 1965 [April 23, 1964], No.16829/64. Heading F1F. A rotary internal combustion engine comprises a cylindrical rotor splined to a shaft 17, Fig. 1, for rotation in a casing liner 26 of substantially elliptical shape with a flattened periphery adjacent one end of its minor axis. The rotor which abuts the flattened periphery is adjacent to but does not touch the other end of the minor axis. Hollow vanes 23, as shown four in number, having holes 41 at their rounded tips through which lubricant can pass, slide in slots 21 extending the width of the rotor but which are offset rearwardly of and parallel to a rotor radius. Coil springs 28 urge the vanes outwardly of the slots into sliding contact with the liner. Gaseous fuel - air mixture drawn in through a port 37, is, on rotation of the rotor in the direction of the arrow 22, compressed, ignited by a spark plug 38, expanded and finally exhausted through a port 36, with an explosion occurring in each of the four intervane spaces during each revolution of the shaft 17. Between the liner 26 and outer casing 10 exist cooling spaces 13 through which either liquid or air may circulate. The casing is made in two flanged halves bolted together with an interposed gasket to prevent leakage, the bolts passing through holes 35 in flanges 34.
