Abstract
580,771. Rotary engines. SPITZER, H. May 19, 1944, No. 9703. [Class 110 (ii)] In a rotary internal combustion engine of the kind comprising a compressor chamber and a motor chamber, each having an eccentric rotor in peripheral contact with the encircling chamber wall and with a spring-pressed outwardly sliding abutment, the valve means for transferring compressed fuel from the compressor chamber to the motor chamber comprises a suitably ported oscillating cylinder the hollow interior of which also serves as -a combustion chamber. The valve cylinder 49 which is closed at both ends and is received within a cylindrical bore 48. is connected to a bell crank, one arm 57 of which is pressed against a cam 60 carried by the rotor shaft by a spring 59 connected between the other arm 58 and the engine casing. Fuel is drawn in through a port 68, Fig. 2, and is compressed in chamber 2<1>, subsequently passing into the valve cylinder 49 through ports 50, 52 which /are brought into registry at the correct moment, ports 51, 53 then being closed. Subsequently, ports 51, 53 return to the open position and ports 50, 52 to the closed position, and the charge is ignited by a sparking plug 55 and passes into the motor chamber 2<11>, finally exhausting through port 69. Separate housings may be employed for chambers 2<1> and 2<11>.
