Abstract

1511654 Rotary positive-displacement fluid machines H O HEBDITCH 23 May 1975 [26 June 1974] 28373/74 Heading F1F An I.C. engine comprises a casing 11, 12, an eccentric 19, 21 on a rotary shaft 18 which slidingly engages the sides 20 of a cavity formed within a block 15 located in the casing, and slides 13, 14 between which block 15 reciprocates tranversely of the block cavity as the eccentric orbits due to rotation of shaft 18. Two variable-volume spaces are thus formed between the eccentric and the ends of the block cavity. An inlet port 25, exhaust port 40, transfer ports 23, 24 and a spark-plug hole 26 are provided in the casing. Thus starting from the Figure 3 position, clockwise rotation of eccentric 19, 21 exhausts burnt gases via port 40 whilst uncovering port 25, due to leftwards movement of block 15, to draw in a fresh charge. When the eccentric reaches the upper part of the block cavity, exhaust is completed and compression of charge in the lower space begins by continued rotation. As compression is terminating, Fig. 2, compressed charge is transferred via port 24 and transfer chamber 22 to port 23 and thence to the top space for further compression before ignition by plug 27. The block may oscillate about a pin Figs. 6 to 9 (not shown), and instead of being completely enclosed by the casing may be merely located between a pair of casing end parts Fig. 10 (not shown).
