Abstract

1392190 Rotary piston internal combustion engines ROLLS-ROYCE (1971) Ltd 3 Nov 1972 [10 Nov 1971] 52132/71 Heading F1F A rotary piston internal combustion engine of the kind having two engine units of the trochoidal type comprises a combustion chamber 36 located externally of the cavities 14, 15 of the units. In use, air is inducted into chamber A and then undergoes a first stage of compression in both this chamber and a chamber of the cavity 14 connected by duct 25 to cavity 15. A second stage of compression takes place in the respective working chamber of cavity 14 alone and the compressed gas is fed into a combustion chamber 36 external to cavity 14. After ignition the combustion gases expand limit in cavity 14 alone and then in both cavities due to connection by duct 26. The gases are finally exhausted through outlet 24.
