Abstract

1518098 Rotary positive-displacement fluid-machines WANKEL GmbH 27 Oct 1975 [26 Oct 1974] 46426/74 Heading F1F A motive-power assembly comprises a 3:4 type Wankel I.C. engine 1, which may have two rotors, a compressor 3 supplying partially compressed air to the engine and driven by a gas turbine 2, and a combustion chamber 4 for the turbine containing a fuel nozzle 4a and receiving exhaust gases from the engine and also air from the compressor through a by-pass duct 5. The air supply to the engine may be shut-off by a valve 6 so that the engine can be stopped while the turbine and compressor continue to operate. The turbine may be started by a motor at A. The compressor may be furnished with an aftercooler 7. A restriction in the duct 5 may be adjustable. The turbine and compressor may be multi-stage. In the engine the air enters through a port 11 and after further compression receives fuel from a nozzle 13, ignition being effected by either a spark-plug (not shown) or by the heat of compression. Partially expanded combustion products are transferred from the respective chamber to the leading adjacent one through a port 16 while the latter is being traversed by the intermediate apex of the piston 8 so that expansion occurs in two stages. Additional fuel may be injected through a nozzle 19. Exhaust gases are discharged through a port 18.
