Abstract
A rotary internal combustion engine has a cylinder (1) housing a rotating piston (2). The piston (2) has a cam (5) formed on its surface such that there is only a minimum clearance between the tip of the cam and the bore of the cylinder (1). As the piston (2) rotates, a mixture of air and fuel is drawn in through the port (12) and when the cam (5) has passed the port (12) the mixture is compressed and forced into the combustion chamber (6). The cam (5) operates the sliding vanes (8) which trap the mixture in the combustion chamber where it is ignited. The gas formed by combustion expands and exerts a force on the radial face of the cam (5) to drive the piston. The exhaust gases then pass out through the port (10).
