Abstract

620,712. Rotary internal-combustion engines. LAKE, W. L. Sept. 11, 1946, No. 27321. [Class 110(ii)] A rotor 1, for an explosion or compressionignition engine is provided with peripheral pockets 4a between pairs of outwardlysliding vanes. Fuel mixture for an explosion engine is induced from an inlet 8 into a pocket and a crescentshaped space between the rotor and the casing bore 3 and then compressed into a pocket before being fired by a plug 10, or previouslyburnt gases. Expansion takes place in a chamber C and the burnt gases exhausted through an outlet 9. For a compression - ignition engine, fuel is injected through an inlet 29. The rotor has small clearances between its ends and the casing walls. Arcuate packing members 14 are provided. Lubricating oil is admitted through passages 15 by way of centrifugally actuated needle valves which close under spring action when the rotor is stationary. More than one inlet and one exhaust port may be provided. The engine may be started electrically or by compressed air. Lightening holes are placed in the rotor.
