Abstract

566,450. Valves. BOORER, A. April 19, 1943, Nos. 6954/44 and 6953/44. Divided out of 566,416. [Class 7 (vi)] In an engine having a valve chamber communicating through a master valve port with the cylinder and inlet valves for controlling the flow to the valve chamber of air and combustible mixture, and an exhaust valve, the air is supplied before the exhaust valve is closed and also before the mixture valve is opened, with or without continuance of the opening after the mixture valve has been closed and after bottom dead-centre has been reached. As shown, a rotary-sleeve admission valve 15 surrounds a fixed core 17 formed with separate admission ports for air and mixture and a single port opening towards the cylinder, the valve having co-operating ports. The ports are spaced apart along the length of the valve. A similar rotary sleeve valve 14 surrounds a water-cooled core 16 and controls the exhaust gases. Both valves communicate with a space behind a master valve 24 adapted to be opened continuously from towards the end of the firing stroke to the first part of the compression stroke. Early in the firing stroke, both sets of ports in the exhaust valve 14 are opened to permit rapid exhaustion of the burnt gases when the master valve 24 opens. Near the middle of the exhaust stroke, the air passage to the core 16 opens, but the port leading towards the cylinder remains closed, opening near the end of the stroke to scavenge the cylinder and thereafter provide a passage for the air and mixture. Early in the induction stroke, the port in the valve 15 controlling the passage of combustible mixture to the core 17 opens and the passage 21 to the exhaust valve 14 closes simultaneously. For the remainder of the inlet stroke, compressed air and combustible mixture enter the cylinder, the mixture being cut off at bottom dead-centre. After about a quarter of the compression stroke, the master valve closes, the air continuing to have access to the space behind it however until near the end of the stroke when the admission valve 14 simultaneously closes the air inlet to the core 17 and the outlet therefrom towards the cylinder. Specification 565,748 is referred to.
