Abstract

632,128. Valve-gear. BOORER, A. Jan. 28, 1948, No. 2613. [Class 7 (vi)] In a four stroke multi-cylinder engine wherein the intake and exhaust ports 16, 17 of each cylinder are controlled by rotary valves 20, 24 and by a master poppet valve 14, the exhaust valve 24 is provided with straight-through passages 25, which open the ports 17 twice each revolution of the valve, and is driven at quarter engine speed, and the inlet valve 20 is provided with ports 21 which open the ports 16 once each revolution of the valve and is driven at half engine speed, Air or combustible mixture is supplied to the interior of the valve 20 either through an open end of the valve or through a ring of ports midway along the valve. The master valve 14 opens about 40 degrees before bottom dead centre of the expansion stroke and closes about 40 degrees after bottom dead centre of the inlet stroke, and the exhaust port 17 is arranged to be fully opened by the time the master valve 14 opens, the inlet port 16 being still partially open when the valve 14 closes.
