Abstract

152,882. Paterson, T. W. Nov. 22, 1919. Valves; valve-gear.-A rotary sleeve-valve 3 between the piston and the cylinder has three ports controlling respectively the inlet port 5 to the crank-chamber, a terminal transfer port 6, and an exhaust part 9 near the cylinder head. The opening and closing of the transfer port 6 are effected by the combined movements of the piston and sleeve. The port 5 is arranged low down in the cylinder so as to be opened in the early part of the up-stroke. The invention is shown applied to an engine with twin-opposed cylinders. The valves may be worked by gearing direct from the crank-shaft, as shown, or they may have stub spindles passing through the cylinder heads and driven by chain gearing from a side shaft.
