Abstract
158,925. Tompkins, W. W. Sept. 17, 1919. Valves; valve-gear.-In a four-stroke engine, inlet and exhaust ports 20, 21 are controlled by the upper edges of concentric reciprocating sleeve valves 25, 26 respectively, arranged between the piston and the cylinder, the exhaust sleeve valve 26 having ports 35 which open to the inlet chambers 19. The sleeve valves are worked by eccentrics 33, 41 on a half-speed shaft; the exhaust eccentric 41 leads, and its throw is twothirds that of the inlet eccentric 33, so that the movement of the outer sleeve is slower than that of the inner sleeve. The sleeve valves have packing-rings 27, 34 of sufficient width to seal the ports 35, 21 respectively.
