Abstract

21,555. Tompkins, W. R. Oct. 26. Valves; valve-gear.-Two sliding sleeve valves A, B surrounding the cylinder are worked by a reciprocating cam-bar 30 having slots with a straight part at each end 42, 43, Fig. 3, joined by an inclined part 44, which gives the valve-rod 25 a quick movement while the piston is at the end of a stroke. In a four-cvlinder engine working on a four-stroke cycle, the cranks driving the two cam-bars are 90 degrees apart, and in a six-cylinder engine, 120 degrees; while in an eight - cylinder engine, four cambars are used. The admission and exhaust ports of the valve A are open simultaneously.
