Abstract

734,268. Valve gear; engine construction; charging and cooling cylinders; fuel injection pumps. LANOVA AKT.-GES. Nov. 7, 1951 [June 27, 1951], No. 26119/51. Classes 7(2), 7(3) and 7(6). The crankcase 21 of an overhead valve engine is extended to provide a part 12 immediately adjacent the side of the cylinder head 7, in which part is arranged the camshaft 14 and tappet 13 whilst the remainder of the valve gear 5 is carried by the cylinder head and engages the tappet along a thrust face parallel to the cylinder axis so that expansion of the cylinder block has no affect on the valve gear clearance. In the horizontal cylinder engine shown, having the crankcase 21 arranged below the cylinder block and the pistons 24 connected to the cranks 20 through levers 27 and connecting rods 28, each valve 4 is actuated from the tappet 13 through a rocker 5 the arm 9 of which carries a clearance adjusting screw 11 arranged at right angles to the cylinder axis and contacting the end face of the tappet 13 which is parallel to the cylinder axis so that on expansion of the cylinder block relatively the crankcase 21 the screw 11 is merely moved across the end face of the tappet. The screw 11 projects through a sleeve 16 screwed into the cylinder head and clamping a sealing ring 15 against the crankcase. In a fuel injection engine the injection pump 31 is mounted on the part 12 of the crankcase for actuation from the camshaft 14. In a two stroke engine the valves in the cylinder head are exhaust valves, the inlet ports being piston controlled, and the scavenging pump comprises a circular fan arranged at the end of the crankshaft opposite to the flywheel which, in an air-cooled engine, may form the cooling-fan. The invention is also shown applied to a vertical cylinder engine and in a modification having valves arranged in the cylinder head with their axes perpendicular to the cylinder axis, the rockers 5 are omitted and the tappets contact the ends of the valve stems directly, clearance adjusting screws being provided on the ends of the tappets.
