Abstract

804,465. Four-stroke engines; valves and valve gear. BOUTELEUX, R. July 26, 1955, No. 21524/55. Classes 7(2) and 7(6) A cylinder head is provided with coaxial inlet and exhaust valves 16, 11, and an inlet chamber 4 in which a portion of the charge is precompressed by a reciprocating piston 6, the exhaust valve 11 having a cylindrical portion 12 connected by an apertured frusto-conical portion to a tubular portion 13 which surrounds and guides the stem 17 of the inlet valve 16. The valves 16, 11 are operated from a cam shaft 36 through rockers 38, 37, pivoted on a common bracket 40 and the rocker 38 operates, through a pin and slot connection 45, a rocker 39 which operates a valve 20 controlling the connection of the inlet passage 18 to the inlet chamber 4. The valve 20 closes before and opens after valve 16 and a portion of the charge is forced from the engine cylinder back into chamber 4 before valve 16 closes, the charge in chamber 4 being further precompressed by the piston 6 before valve 16 opens. The valve 11 is loaded by a single spring 27 and the valve 16 by two springs 31 which act against a spring abutment plate 29, Fig. 3, guided by a stationary pin 32. Lubricating oil is fed to the sliding surface of the valve 11 by a pipe 52. The incoming charge is heated by the exhaust valve which it helps to cool.
