Abstract

140,598. Snarry, J. W., and Bullows, R. J. March 27, 1919. Valve-gear; regulating. - A charge compressed beneath the piston is admitted to the cylinder, whilst the exhaust ports 19 are open, through a valve 1 mounted in a detachable seating 3 in the piston and operated by a cam 14 secured to the crank-pin. The exhaust ports 19 and the inlet ports 18 to the crank chamber extend around the cylinder malls. The seating 3 for the valve 1 is' screwed in the piston, and has an annular rim 22 to guide the incoming charge axially upwards and deflect the burnt gases towards the ports. As shown in Fig. 1, the cam directly engages a tappet rod 11 within the connecting-rod; in a modification, the cam is secured on the outer end of an overhung crank-pin and works a short tappet moving on guides secured to the connecting-rod big-end, this tappet rod carrying an arm which engages the tappet rod 11; and in another modification, Fig. 6, the cam 45 is keyed on a crank-pin 42 formed integrally with the cranks and shaft, the big-end is split transversely for assembly on the pin, and the cam acts on the rod 11 through a small lerver 49 pivoted on the big-end at 51, and a short tappet 48 moving in guides in the neck of the connecting-rod. The lever 49 is adjustable on a block 50 on the pivot 51 by means of a screw 52, in order to vary .the clearance between the cam and the lever.
