Abstract

567,029. Valve gear ; cooling. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., and PERKINS, H. Oct. 13, 1943, No. 16770. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In an engine of the kind comprising two parallel cylinder barrels in a casting and coplanar with the axis of the crank-shaft and in which the cylinder heads are formed in one piece, the valves of each cylinder being disposed in angular relationship and at opposite sides of the combustion chamber, rockers for actuating the valves are operated from cams on a single cam-shaft through pushrods enclosed in a cored passage formed in the cylinder casting and the cylinder head. Cams 33 on a single cam-shaft mounted in the crankcase 37 actuate the tappets 29, 41 connected by push-rods 23, 39 to the rockers 13, 19 of the inlet and exhaust valves respectively, and the arms are accommodated in a passage 45 in the cylinder casting 1 and casings 17, 18 in the cylinder head, the casings being separated by a re-entrant wall 53 to promote cooling.
